2010 - Glencoe
In 2010, from 24th-27th June, we flew up to Glasgow, hired a minibus and went walking in Glencoe and Glen Nevis. We stayed at Fort William backpackers, which to be honest was a bit of a disappointment. Although it was clean, and the staff friendly, there was only one working shower on our floor and had to service almost 40 people. When you've been walking in the hills all day, that's the last thing you need. and
The hills themselves, were gorgeous: on Thursday, shortly after landing at Glasgow airport we set out to do a warm-up walk on the three sisters of Glencoe. The scenery there is nothing short of stunning, but our dinner reservation meant that we had only limited time in which to do the walk and consequently the pace was quite brutal. The views from the top were non-existent as the mist had come down by then, and we acquired 4 extra members of our party in the form of two sets of hikers who were unable to find their way down the mist.
Friday's walk is known as "Thunderbolt", and took place in the Mamores; after a stiff initial climb we had a glorious walk on a fantastic horseshoe. The descent through the forest with barely a marked path was epic. We were cut to ribbons by the trees and thought we must've taken the wrong route but apparently this is the recognised route down.
On Saturday, we walked in Glen Nevis, another stunning horseshoe with gorgeous breathtaking views all around and not a drop of rain.
